| I think the cost here is related to the fact that the product simply didn't exist before. The cost of materials and machining (after initial setup anyways) would be the same no matter what kind of car the pinion gear was going into. People have done this 100x over for a Ford 9" rear end, so initial setup and R&D cost are virtually zero.
